When you install LVL on a job, you are not just putting in a beam. You are installing a structural product that must carry load safely for decades.
If that product is not compliant, the risk sits with you.
Recent industry conversations have highlighted non-compliant LVL entering the Australian market. While it may look similar on site, and sometimes be cheaper, it may not meet Australian Standards.
For builders, that is not a small issue. It is a serious business risk.

Why this matters to builders
As a trusted family business supplying builders for more than 145 years, Dahlsens understands what is at stake.
Quality, compliance and technical backing:
- Protect your projects
- Protect your licence
- Protect your reputation
- Protect your bottom line
When a structural issue appears years later, it is not the cheapest supplier who gets the call. It is the builder.
That is why who you buy from matters.
What makes LVL compliant in Australia?
In Australia and New Zealand, LVL must comply with AS/NZS 4357.0.
A compliant LVL stamp should clearly include:
- Reference to AS/NZS 4357.0
- Manufacturer name or registered brand
- Clear branding
- A-BOND glue line classification
- Formaldehyde emission class (E0 or E1)
- Treatment code if treated (e.g. H2, H2S, H3 under AS/NZS 1604.1)
- Penetration code (e.g. G or E) where relevant
All good established brands will have a printed brand clearly visible on each and every stick and some will even have branded packaging when sold in packs.
A compliant stamp typically looks like:
[Brand Name] | AS/NZS 4357.0 | A-BOND | E0 | [Grade] | [Treatment Code]
If any of this is missing, that should raise questions.
Warning signs of non-compliance
- No clear manufacturer branding
- No reference to AS/NZS 4357.0
- No “A-BOND” marking
- No formaldehyde class listed
- Vague structural grades not recognised under AS 1720
- No traceable documentation
If you are unsure, stop and ask. A quick call is better than a long-term defect.
Not all engineered timber is equal
LVL is not simply “glued timber”.
It involves:
- Peeling logs into veneers
- Precision drying
- Structural adhesive bonding
- Controlled pressing under heat and pressure
- Ongoing testing and verification
Small variations in moisture, adhesive quality or press settings can change how a beam performs.
Lower-tier operations may rely on limited testing data over long periods. That increases the chance of inconsistent or non-conforming product entering the market.
For builders, that can mean:
- Site delays
- Engineering redesign
- Failed inspections
- Rectification costs
- Reputation damage
Short-term savings can become long-term liability.
The brands Dahlsens stands behind
At Dahlsens, we partner with suppliers who invest heavily in:
- Manufacturing standards
- Independent testing

- Traceability
- Technical support
We proudly supply and stand behind leading LVL and engineered timber brands including:
- Meyer Timber (meySPAN®, meyWALL®, meyFRAME12®, and TermiSPAN®)
- Tilling (SmartLVL)
- Wesbeam (e-beam)
- ITI Australia
These manufacturers:
- Clearly stamp products to AS/NZS 4357.0
- Provide verified structural data
- Offer engineering support
- Maintain strict quality assurance systems
- Stand behind their product with technical and liability backing
When you purchase these brands through Dahlsens, you can be confident you are installing compliant, traceable and supported product.
Technical support is part of the product
LVL does not sit neatly inside AS 1684 like traditional framing. Builders rely on:
- Span tables
- Design manuals
- Software tools
- Installation guides
- Prompt technical advice
That support only exists when suppliers invest in engineering capability.
If something looks unusual on site: a stamp, a connection, a deflection question – get advice before making changes. Even small connection gaps can affect performance if outside tolerance.
It is always better to check than assume.
It’s about more than supply
At Dahlsens, we do not just move timber. We:
- Help you access compliant structural products
- Provide whole-of-house solutions
- Connect you with trusted brands
- Offer knowledgeable, local support
- Stand behind what we supply
Because timber is not just a stick of wood.
It is a structural system expected to perform for decades.
And when your name is on the build, you need confidence in the product, and the people behind it.
